The National Weather Service has advised that severe thunderstorms with the potential of high winds, flooding, lightning and a risk of tornadoes will come through our area between 4 a.m. to 9 a.m on Monday, November 18th. This is when we have students waiting at bus stops and parents dropping students off. Out of an abundance of caution, the start of school day will be delayed until 10 a.m. Buses will run on this delayed schedule at 9 a.m.so please plan accordingly. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served as usual. Schools will release at normal dismissal time. Parents may also elect to have their student complete the day virtually. Thank you for your understanding and commitment to student and staff safety.

This week has been filled with many learning opportunities for Ms. Windham's third grade class! They learned about the different branches of military in honor of Veteran's Day. There were two branches highlighted each day and the students were tasked with different jobs that would be expected when serving in the military. Some challenges were not pictured, such as decoding cryptic messages, navigating with maps, and engineering structures. In the pictures below, the students are participating in vital communication skills, model satellite building, and boat construction. So much fun!

In PE, we are practicing our basketball skills. Dribble Knockout and Dribble Tag are always engaging for students and help with control under pressure. Using BEEF as a reminder for shooting technique is so effective, too—it’s easy for kids to remember and puts the focus on fundamentals. Students worked together in teams playing Hotshots to practice their shooting! Here are a few pics of our Hotshots Champions! #perocks #dragonpride #ignite

The Escape Room at Literacy Night was a big hit! Kudos to the smart parents and kids who stayed the course and cracked the code! From everyone in fifth grade, we would like to say thank you to all the parents and students who joined us for literacy night! Your participation helped make the event a success and together, we were able to celebrate the joy of reading! In the fifth grade hall, families worked to complete various escape rooms. The challenge seen in the pictures was to solve five different puzzles in order to open the locked box. Thank you to everyone who participated and also to those who helped the students get to that box!

Yesterday on Wednesday, November 6th, third through fifth grade experienced a literacy presentation hosted by Caradith Craven. Caradith works at the Purcell Public Library and utilized book donations from Best of Books. She did a phenomenal job at engaging the students with activities, such as role playing! Thank you for allowing our students to have this enriched experience and bringing literacy to life for them! In the pictures, you will see third grade enjoying one of the role playing activities that were used alongside a book about gravity.

In third grade, the students have been reading the story "Whooping Cranes in Danger." They have learned about their migration, their recovery away from being an extinct species, and various facts about the life of a whooping crane. In Ms. Windham's class, the students learned how the whooping cranes and other birds fly, along with what helps them migrate long distances. Using colored paper, tape, paper clips, glue, scissors, and excellent folding skills, the students were tasked with creating a plane that can travel great distances and soar high in the sky, just like the ultralight planes the whooping cranes followed to learn how to fly!

Mrs. Arnold’s 5th grade social studies classes completed a project that combined research skills with artistic expression, focusing on the Jamestown Settlement. The students researched the structure and building style of the Jamestown Fort and then created a 3D model based on their findings. This hands-on approach encourages creativity as students were able to use everyday household items to construct their model of the historical fort. This assignment not only enhanced their understanding of early American history but also fosters innovation and problem-solving as they worked hard to bring their research to life.

In Ms. Windham's third grade class, the students have been reading a story about two children starting an organization to help rescue animals suffering from oil spills in the ocean. Through a series of timed challenges, the students got to experience how cleaning up oil in a body of water and off of a creature could be hard work!
