Bullseye Education: Archery Hits the Mark for Purcell Junior High

Archery programs are proving to be a highly effective way for schools to engage students, offering a host of benefits that extend far beyond the range. The Purcell Junior High Archery team is a shining example of this, demonstrating exceptional success both individually and as a cohesive unit.

The Transformative Power of Archery 🎯

Unlike many traditional sports, archery offers an inclusive environment where success is not dependent on size, gender, or athletic background. It is a sport of precision and mental discipline, making it uniquely beneficial for student development:

Focus and Concentration: Archery requires archers to tune out distractions, concentrate solely on their technique, and aim for the target. This intensive mental focus translates into improved concentration and patience in the classroom and in daily life. Confidence and Self-Esteem: Every successful shot, every improved score, is a measurable form of progress that directly builds self-confidence. Students learn the value of hard work and perseverance, fostering a growth mindset that is crucial for academic success.

Discipline and Goal-Setting: The structured nature of archery, which includes rigorous safety protocols and the repetition of a precise shooting sequence, instills discipline and responsibility. Students are continually setting and working towards personal goals, a vital life skill.

Physical and Mental Wellness: Drawing a bow builds muscle strength and core stability, while the required deep breathing and calm state promote mental clarity and stress management.

The Purcell Junior High Archery team has successfully harnessed these benefits, transforming them into measurable results. Their dedication to the sport has positioned them as a competitive force.

The team has consistently hit their marks, with the team achieving a fantastic second-place finish at the recent Lexington Tournament. Their strong individual performances were key to this success, with multiple archers finishing in the top 20.

The combined individual and team achievements are a testament to the archers’ commitment and the quality of their instruction.

Commending Coach Steve Clary

This level of sustained excellence is only possible with dedicated leadership. We commend Coach Steve Clary for his ongoing, unwavering commitment to the Purcell Junior High Archery program.

Mr. Clary, who has served as a devoted science teacher for over 31 years, extends his passion for education and mentorship to the archery range, fostering not only skilled archers but also well-rounded, disciplined young adults. His guidance is instrumental in teaching students the technical skills of archery while reinforcing the life lessons of focus, perseverance, and teamwork. The entire Purcell community is grateful for Coach Clary's tireless work in shaping the next generation of successful archers and citizens.

To ensure everyone has the best possible experience and a safe environment, we have a few friendly reminders:

Positive Sportsmanship: Let's show our Dragon pride by demonstrating excellent sportsmanship at all times. Cheer loud, be respectful to officials, opposing teams, and fellow fans, and create an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and valued.

Be a Great Role Model: Our actions in the stands reflect on our school and community. Let's exemplify the highest moral character and support our teams with positivity and enthusiasm!

Dear Purcell school families:

We know many families in our community count on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP) to provide meals for their families. Unfortunately, due to the federal government shutdown, SNAP benefits will likely be temporarily interrupted, beginning Nov. 1. We understand this disruption may cause uncertainty, worry, and financial burden for some members of our school family.

Please know those impacted are not alone; we’re here to help. We hope the following information will be beneficial to those facing difficulty during this challenging time:

  • Students will continue to receive breakfast and lunch at school, based on their current eligibility status. If a family’s financial circumstances have changed for any reason, including government furloughs, parents can apply or update their free or reduced-price meal application by visiting our website at www.purcellps.org

  • Parents can dial 211 on their phones to receive additional information about food banks, pantries, and other community support programs across Oklahoma.  Please contact Malia Turner turnerm@purcellps.org, School-Based Family Specialist, at 405-442-0099 for support in locating resources.

  • Our school team stands ready to support anyone with questions or specific needs. Please contact your child’s school office if we can assist your family.

  • Oklahomans can learn more about how the government shutdown will affect SNAP benefits by visiting the Department of Human Services' FAQ webpage. Those who need assistance and those who would like to support their fellow Oklahomans can find additional resources on the DHS “Be a Neighbor” webpage.

Although this situation is beyond our control, we can decide how to care for one another. Our school team is committed to keeping you informed and ensuring every student feels safe, secure, and supported.

Thank you for your partnership with Purcell PS.
