The Heartbeat of Our Hometown: Celebrating Public Schools Week

As we observe Public Schools Week, I find myself reflecting on more than just the daily bells and lesson plans. When I look across our campuses and out into the streets of Purcell, I see a clear truth: our schools are not just buildings where learning happens—they are the very heartbeat of our community.

Public education is a unique American promise, and here in Purcell, we take that promise to heart. In a town like ours, the school district is the common thread that weaves us all together. Whether it’s the roar of the crowd on a Friday night, a choir performance that brings us to tears, or the simple sight of our buses rolling through town, the Dragon spirit defines who we are.

Our schools provide:
A Safe Haven: A place where every child is fed, supported, and cheered for.
A Local Engine: We are one of the largest employers and a training ground for the next generation of Purcell’s workforce.
A Shared Identity: From the youngest Pre-K student to our most seasoned alumni, we are all part of the same Dragon story.

Beyond our city limits, public schools are the engine of our state. Oklahoma’s prosperity depends on a workforce that is adaptable, skilled, and ready to lead. By providing a high-quality education to every child—regardless of their background or zip code—we are ensuring that our state remains a place where innovation thrives, and the Oklahoma Standard continues to shine.

On a national level, public schools are the great equalizer. They are the laboratories of democracy where students learn to collaborate with people who think differently from them. By investing in our schools, we are investing in the stability and progress of our entire country. We aren't just teaching algebra and history; we are cultivating the citizens, leaders, and problem-solvers of tomorrow.

This week, let’s celebrate the incredible work happening in our classrooms and commit ourselves to the success of every Dragon.

What a night of high-stakes basketball at the Reimer Center! Whether it was a dominant championship performance or a gritty, down-to-the-wire battle, both teams gave us plenty to be proud of.

🏆 DISTRICT CHAMPIONS: Lady Dragons
The Lady Dragons left no doubt tonight, put on a masterclass performance, and secured the Area III District 8 Championship with a massive 97-13 win over Harding Charter!

Next Up: They advance to host Harrah right here at the Reimer Center.

When: Tuesday, Feb 24th @ 6:00 PM

Dragons Fight to the Finish
The Dragons were involved in a defensive battle against Harding Charter that came down to the very last possession. Though they fell just two points short in a 38-36 heartbreaker, their effort and toughness were on full display until the final buzzer.

Next Up: The Dragons look to bounce back at Home vs Harrah
When: Thursday, Feb 24 @7:30

We are incredibly proud of the heart shown by all our student-athletes tonight. Let's keep that home-court advantage strong! 🔴⚫️

One in a Hundred! 🎓🌟
We are beyond thrilled to announce that senior Paisley Nichols has been named an Oklahoma Academic All-Stater!

This is one of the most exclusive honors a student in Oklahoma can receive. To even be considered for this award, a student must earn a composite ACT score of 30 or higher, SAT score of 1370 or higher, or be a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. From that elite pool of applicants, only 100 students are selected statewide based on a rigorous evaluation of their:

Academic Achievement
Leadership Abilities
Motivation
Character

Paisley, your relentless pursuit of excellence and your integrity in and out of the classroom have truly set you apart. We couldn't be prouder to have you representing the Dragons!

Please join us in the comments by congratulating Paisley on this massive achievement!

Today, we’re shouting out Officer Salgado for everything the does for our school district. Being an SRO is about so much more than safety—it’s about the morning high-fives, the mentorship, and building a bridge between our students and the community.

Thank you, Officer Salgado for being a leader our students can look up to and a constant support for our staff. We are lucky to have you in our halls!

*Keep away from the "danger zone" which is the 10ft around the bus.

*Wait until the bus is completely stopped and doors open to approach the bus.

*Be mindful of your surroundings at school bus stops. Other vehicles, properties, etc.

Purcell Public Schools will be in session tomorrow, Friday, January 30th. Temperatures are expected to be below freezing, so please be sure students are dressed warmly. Use caution when traveling, as there may still be slick areas on roads and sidewalks. Bus routes may run slower than normal. We appreciate your patience while waiting for the bus to arrive. Thank you for your continued support and stay safe!

Purcell Public Schools will be CLOSED on Thursday, January 29th, due to hazardous road conditions.

While we know everyone is eager to get back to class, many of our district’s secondary roads and rural routes remain slick and unsafe for travel. The safety of our students and staff is our #1 priority.
