Safety Update: Weather Emergency and School Closures

Dear Purcell Families,

This morning, our community experienced a significant and rapidly evolving weather emergency as a tornado moved through the Purcell area. I am writing to provide you with an update on our students, our facilities, and our plan for the remainder of the day.

First and most importantly, all students and staff are safe. Our district emergency protocols were activated immediately, and all students who had arrived at school were successfully moved to designated shelters.

I am pleased to report that no Purcell Public Schools facilities sustained structural damage during the storm. However, the resulting power outages have impacted our ability to conduct school at two of our sites.

Due to ongoing power outages and the inability to maintain a functional learning environment, the following schools are CLOSED today:

Purcell Intermediate School
Purcell Junior High School

All other sites will remain open. We understand that the timing of this storm created extreme difficulty for travel. Please note that any student who was unable to make it to school this morning due to the weather will be given an excused absence. This absence will not impact semester test exemptions. Parents may also check their student out by following the appropriate checkout procedures for the school site.

This storm hit during the most chaotic time of the day—morning drop-off. I want to personally recognize the heroic efforts of our administrators, teachers, bus drivers, and support staff. Their quick thinking and calm response ensured that students were moved from buses and hallways into shelters in a matter of moments.

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the City of Purcell and the Purcell Police Department for their prompt support and coordination.

To our parents: thank you. In an emergency, our absolute priority is securing students first, which can sometimes delay our ability to send out communications. We truly appreciate your patience and cooperation as we worked to ensure every child was secured before we addressed logistics.

We will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates regarding tomorrow's schedule for the impacted buildings via our district website and messaging system.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sheli McAdoo
