On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will come across the United States, allowing our students to witness a rare solar event. With such a monumental event occurring during the school day, Purcell Public Schools will be conducting a viewing of the event for students, faculty, and staff members who wish to participate in grades 2nd through 12th grade. Safety is our top priority, and we would like you and your child to be aware of the precautionary steps we are putting in place for the event.
Homemade or ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient ways to view an eclipse, as the reflectivity and polarization are not high enough for viewing the eclipse in a safe manner. To ensure that each participant is safe, Purcell Public Schools will be supplying those who wish to participate with a pair of glasses specifically designed for eclipse viewing. These glasses conform to the transmission requirements of ISO 12312-2, which are filters specifically designed for direct observation of the sun. We will be viewing a partial solar eclipse (at its greatest point will look like a fingernail/crescent shape.) It will be at maximum coverage at 1:44 p.m. That means glasses must be worn at all times during the viewing. Students should never look at the sun without special eye protection, and removing glasses, even temporarily, may have serious effects on your eyes. Outdoor activities will be restricted from 12:00 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. on the day of the eclipse. Precautions will be taken to cover windows where necessary to prevent accidental viewing of the eclipse.
Because of these safety concerns, a parent or guardian signature is required for students to participate in the event using the provided eclipse glasses. Students who do not complete this form and return to the school by April 4, 2024, will not be able to participate. For more information relating to overall safety viewing during an eclipse, https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/safety/
Sincerely,
Sheli McAdoo, Ph.D.
Superintendent

We are PROUD to announce Purcell Elementary's Teacher of the Year, Mrs.
Barbara Allen! She is a wonderful pre-k teacher who has taught at PES for 24 years. She goes above and beyond to love and care for students each and every day.
Mrs. Allen has lived in the Purcell and surrounding area for over forty years. She loved that her girls were able to grow up here in Purcell and attend such a wonderful school district. Having her oldest follow in her footsteps has been an added bonus to teaching here. She grew up in Norman, Oklahoma, graduating from Norman High and later attended USAO for her Bachelors degree and then from ECU later, obtaining her Masters degree.
Mrs. Allen’s biggest pride and joy are her grandkids, Deaken and Keeley Dobbins. She loves them beyond measure!❤️ And she’s very proud that both are Dragons! 🐲❤️
She’s been working with children since she was a teenager, so teaching was definitely her calling. When asked what she enjoys most about teaching, this was her response, “Every day there is something to smile about. Seeing student’s eager faces ready to learn fills her cup. I could write a book about the many funny stories that have occurred throughout my career. I'm so very blessed to be working here at Purcell Elementary as a Pre-k Teacher and to have been so fortunate to have the best team ever!”
Congratulations Mrs. Allen on a job well done and such a well deserved honor!❤️🐲❤️🍎🎉

PES February Staff & Teacher of the Month: Office/Lunch Secretary Robin Sheehy and 2nd grade teacher Theda Engert.
Read what their colleagues had to say about them:
Robin Sheehy
Robin wears many hats in the office and is always willing to help. I know I can always depend on Robin! Her hard work and dedication to teachers and students does not go unnoticed.
Robin is a wonderful coworker. She is one of the first faces our parents see and always greets them with a smile. She works her magic with the students with a bag of ice, a bandaid, and loving heart. She's our copier guru! Her presence is missed when she is not at work.
Robin wears so many hats! She has an unlimited stash of bandaids and always is willing to help out where she is needed. I know she has office work to do each day, but stops everything at any moment to help a student or teacher out when in need!
Theda Engert
Mrs. Engert goes above and beyond to help her students and team. She really is the definition of a team player. For her classroom she looks for ways to help her students grow daily. She's always willing to ask questions and learn. As a part of her team she is the one who lifts you up when you're down and checks on you daily no matter what she's got going on. This also translates into her own classroom where she has created wonderful relationships with her students. We're thankful to have her here at PES.
She is a great colleague and always willing to help! She is supportive, encouraging, and always giving of her time! She loves giving words of affirmation and she thinks of others by showing empathy.
Mrs. Engert is someone you can count on. She loves teaching and loves her students. She will strive to make sure that her students succeed. She is always willing to lend a helping hand. She supports me and helps me through the tough days.
Very deserving ladies. We're thankful to have them on our team! #DragonCARES

We love Fridays when our Dragon teams come to greet our students! Today the Dragon baseball team and Dragon cheerleaders joined us for a wonderful start to our Friday!

It's that time of year when we need to see who all of the interested PreK students are for next year as well as any new children who need to begin Kindergarten. Pre-K Registration Application as well as Kindergarten Round-up for 2024-2025 are finally here!
Pre-K Registration Application Form - By filling out the PreK Registration Form, you are letting us know you intend to enroll your child in PES PreK in the Fall for 2024-2025 school year.
We also have a Kindergarten Round-Up for students who did NOT attend our Pre-K Program this year. If your child is a current PreK student you don't need to fill out anything, you will automatically be added to the Kindergarten list.
You will see forms on our website at purcellps.org, select Purcell Elementary, click on the menu at the top, and scroll down to find the enrollment forms. https://www.purcellps.org/o/pes
Students who need a transfer can still put their name on the list, fill out a transfer form, and turn it in to the office - transfers will be processed in late July/early August after in-district student enrollment.
Please read the forms. Many of your questions can be answered there.
If you have other questions, please reach out to our office at 405-442-0099 or stonec@purellps.org. Thank you!
